Atas Fuel Oil Facilities required a risk-mitigation recommendation plan for natural hazards, including earthquake risks for the tank farm area. The services provided included structural and geotechnical performance assessments to develop risk-mitigation recommendations for the existing structures, including oil storage tanks. A key challenge of this project was identifying the most effective solution to minimize economic losses by determining the most suitable retrofit methods to prevent business interruptions. In particular, tank foundations were vulnerable to excessive displacements during an earthquake due to weak soil conditions. This posed a significant challenge for retrofitting, as the foundations were surrounded by dense, operational piping, making business continuity a critical concern.
