Turkish Airlines Hangar Building’s Seismic Retrofitting with Viscous Dampers
Location: Istanbul, Türkiye
Client: Turkish Airlines
Scale: 13,000 m2
A seismic performance evaluation was conducted for a hangar at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport, used by Turkish Airlines for flights and maintenance operations. The hangar’s structural system featured a 60-meter cantilever reinforced concrete shell roof supported by steel cables. The evaluation revealed that the roof system lacked adequate stiffness in the direction orthogonal to its span. To limit lateral displacement, a retrofit solution involving the installation of viscous dampers was proposed. The dampers would be attached between the roof, and additional reinforced concrete shear walls would be constructed on both sides to improve stability.
